Spring Break Starts at ICT: What Travelers Need to Know This Year

Spring break travel season is here, and if your plans include sunshine, beaches, or a long-awaited getaway, your trip might start right here at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT). Whether you’re heading to Florida, Colorado, or visiting family across the country, planning ahead can help you kick off your vacation stress-free.

This year, there’s one extra factor travelers should know about: a partial federal government shutdown that is impacting TSA operations at some airports across the country.

Here’s what that means and how to travel smarter this spring break.

Why TSA Lines May Be Longer This Spring Break

A partial shutdown affecting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began February 14, leaving many Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees working without pay. The shutdown has created staffing shortages and higher call-out rates, which is leading to longer lines at security checkpoints.

While wait times at ICT are not currently impacted, some airports are experiencing wait times of three hours or more, prompting airports to advise travelers to arrive several hours early.

Tips for a Smooth Spring Break Departure from ICT

Arrive Earlier Than Usual

Spring break is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and TSA delays could add time to the process. Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before domestic flights and earlier for international trips.

Pack Smart for Security

Make it easier to get through the checkpoint by following TSA’s basics:

  • Liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less
  • Place liquids in a clear quart-size bag
  • Keep laptops and electronics accessible

Being organized helps keep the line moving.

Check Your Airline and Airport Updates

Flight schedules, security wait times, and gate changes can shift quickly during busy travel periods. Check your airline’s app or website before leaving home.

Consider Carry-On Only

Skipping checked bags can save time at both departure and arrival, especially during peak travel weeks.

Pack Your Patience

Spring break travel means full flights and busy airports nationwide. Giving yourself extra time and staying flexible can make the journey much smoother.

Why Flying from ICT Can Make Travel Easier

One of the best parts about living in Wichita is having a convenient hometown airport. ICT offers:

  • Easy parking close to the terminal
  • Shorter security lines than major hubs
  • Quick access from anywhere in Wichita

Starting your trip locally can help you avoid some of the congestion found at larger airports.

Your Spring Break Starts Here

No matter where you’re headed, a beach, a ski slope, or a family reunion, a little preparation can help your trip start smoothly.

From all of us at ICT, we wish you safe travels, sunny adventures, and a relaxing spring break.
