Preparing for Spring Severe Weather at ICT

Spring in Kansas brings warmer temperatures, longer days, and the potential for severe weather. From strong winds and lightning to heavy rain and tornadoes, this time of year requires heightened awareness and preparation, especially in an airport environment where safety is always our top priority.

At Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), we take spring weather seriously. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we prepare, and how passengers can prepare, too.

Proactive Planning Before Storms Develop

Preparation starts long before storm clouds appear.

ICT’s Operations team closely monitors forecasts from the National Weather Service and local meteorologists, especially during severe weather season. When storms are possible, we coordinate with airlines, air traffic control, emergency responders, and airport partners to review response procedures and ensure everyone is aligned.

Regular training exercises and emergency drills help keep our teams ready for a range of scenarios, including:

  • Severe thunderstorms
  • High winds
  • Lightning events
  • Tornado warnings
  • Flash flooding

Our goal is simple: protect passengers, employees, aircraft, and airport infrastructure.

Protecting Airfield and Ground Operations

Severe weather can significantly impact airfield operations. High winds and lightning can temporarily pause ground activities, including fueling and baggage handling, to ensure employee safety.

When lightning is detected within a certain radius of the airport, ramp operations may be suspended until it is safe to resume. While these pauses can sometimes cause delays, they are essential to protecting the crews working outside.

Aircraft are also carefully managed during severe weather. Airlines and ground crews coordinate aircraft movement, secure equipment, and adjust flight schedules as needed to maintain safe operations.

Keeping Passengers Informed

Clear communication is critical during severe weather events.

Inside the terminal, our teams work to:

  • Provide real-time updates through airline representatives and airport announcements
  • Share information on social media and our website
  • Assist passengers with wayfinding and safety procedures if needed

If a tornado warning is issued, passengers and staff may be directed to designated shelter areas within the terminal. ICT has established safety protocols and clearly identified shelter locations to help keep everyone protected.

How Passengers Can Prepare

While ICT and our airline partners work hard to manage weather impacts, there are steps travelers can take to make their journey smoother during spring storm season:

  1. Check your flight status before leaving for the airport.
Weather in Wichita, or at your connecting or destination city, can affect your itinerary.
  2. Sign up for airline alerts.
Most airlines offer text or app notifications for gate changes, delays, or cancellations.
  3. Allow extra travel time.
Spring storms can impact traffic conditions on the way to the airport.
  4. Pack essentials in your carry-on.
If delays occur, having medications, chargers, snacks, and important items with you can make a big difference.
  5. Stay weather-aware.
Monitoring forecasts, especially if you’re traveling through multiple regions, can help you anticipate potential disruptions.

Safety Is Always the Priority

At ICT, safety drives every decision we make. While severe weather may cause temporary delays or adjustments, those actions are taken to protect everyone at the airport.

Spring in Kansas can be unpredictable, but our teams are trained, prepared, and ready to respond. We’re proud to serve our community year-round, and we appreciate our passengers’ patience when weather impacts travel plans.

As always, thank you for choosing ICT. We look forward to helping you travel safely this spring.
