Prepare for Spring Break Travel: Essential Air Travel Tips

As spring break approaches, airports across the country brace for an influx of travelers eager to escape to warm destinations. With higher passenger volumes, proper preparation can make a significant difference in ensuring a smooth journey.  Whether you’re flying to a tropical beach or a bustling city, planning ahead can help you avoid common travel headaches.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Spring break travel demand is high, leading to increased airfare prices. If you have not yet booked your flight, consider traveling midweek or during off-peak hours to find lower fares and avoid the busiest travel periods.
  • For last minute fare deals, check our Hot Fares page.
  • Plan ahead for parking and visit our Parking Overview page to view maps, rates and availability of all of our lots. If you need assistance in any of the parking areas, or if you need a flat tire inflated, call our ABM Parking at 316-946-4772.
  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight.  Airlines close the ticket counter 45 minutes before departure.
  • Prior to coming to the airport, passengers can save time by checking in online via their airline’s website up to 24 hours before departure time.
  • Packing smart is another key factor in stress-free air travel. Since airlines enforce strict baggage policies, reviewing size and weight limits before heading to the airport can prevent unexpected fees.
  • Carry-on essentials should include important travel documents, medications, jewelry, and chargers to keep devices powered throughout your trip.
  • With crowded flights, space in the overhead bins will be limited.  If you gate-check your bag, make sure you have plenty of time between connections to retrieve your bag.  Otherwise, check your bag.
  • Consider potential travel disruptions and have a backup plan in place. Stay informed about weather conditions at your destination and be flexible with your itinerary when necessary.
  • Download your airline’s ap for up-to-date flight information.

TSA TIPS

  • Unpack before packing to make sure you have no prohibited items in your carry-on or checked bags.
  • Pack smart: Organize your carry-on bags and comply with TSA regulations. Text 275-872 (“AskTSA”) or @AskTSA with any questions.
  • Dress smart: To breeze through security, wear easily removable shoes and follow TSA guidelines for liquids and electronics.
  • Have a valid ID: Make sure you have your REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification.
  • Pack your patience: Be prepared for busy airports and follow TSA guidelines to expedite the process.
  • Passengers are also reminded to bring a maximum of one carry-on bag and one personal item through security screening.

With the right preparation, you can enjoy a seamless and stress-free spring break getaway.
