The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published an Environmental Assessment (EA) dated March 26, 2024 on the proposed improvements to Kansas Highway 96 corridor. On April 22, 2025, the FHWA issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and Section 4(f) de minimis Finding for the proposed project. The proposed project is sponsored by the FHWA, KDOT, and the City of Wichita. The project includes pavement replacement, lane widening, and various interchange improvements to the Kansas Highway 96 (K-96) corridor from the K-96/I-135 interchange 9.5 miles east/southeast to just north of the K-96/I-35/US 54/400 interchange. Due to the proximity of these improvements to the Colonel James Jabara Airport (AAO), KDOT would acquire airport property for K-96 and Webb Road interchange right-of-way (ROW). The FAA accepted FHWA’s invitation to be a Cooperating Agency in the development of the Environmental Assessment.
The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a Finding of No Significant Impact/Record of Decision (FONSI/ROD) for the improvements identified at the Colonel James Jabara Airport Wichita, Kansas. The FONSI/ROD and Environmental Assessment (EA) are being made available to the public pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act. The FONSI/ROD and EA may be viewed at the Wichita Airport Authority Administration Building, 2173 Air Cargo Rd, Wichita, KS 67209, and at the links below.
