Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport will add new technology to 71 airport vehicles designed to enhance safety and situational awareness on the airfield.
The Wichita Airport Authority (WAA) is moving forward with the purchase and installation of Vehicle Movement Area Transponders (VMAT) in WAA-owned vehicles that operate on the airfield, including snow removal, aircraft rescue and firefighting, and airport operations vehicles.
VMAT technology provides real-time vehicle location information, giving air traffic controllers and pilots greater awareness of vehicles operating in movement areas. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) encourages airports to use the technology as an additional tool to help reduce the risk of runway incursions and improve overall airfield safety.
“Safety is always our top priority at ICT,” said Jesse Romo, Director of Airports. “This technology gives air traffic controllers another tool to know where airport vehicles are operating in real time, particularly during complex operations such as snow removal or emergency response.”
The FAA selected WAA to receive federal funding to support the project. The total project budget is $275,000, with FAA Airport Improvement Program grant funding covering 90% of eligible project costs. The remaining costs will be funded through available Airport funds and General Obligation bonds repaid with Airport revenue.
WAA approved the FAA grant application and acceptance of funds on Aug. 4, 2026. A request for bids for the purchase and installation of the equipment was advertised July 26, with bids received Aug. 21.
Installation of the VMAT equipment will further ICT’s ongoing efforts to invest in technology, infrastructure and operational practices that support a safe and efficient airfield for passengers, employees and airline partners.
