ICT and Southwest celebrate end of a restrictive law

Wichita air travelers will have more options to popular destinations beginning Monday, Oct. 13, when the restrictive Wright Amendment comes to an end. The federal law, adopted in 1979, was repealed in 2006 though some restrictions were left intact through Oct. 13, 2014.

Many state political and business leaders fought over the years to repeal Wright. The amendment limited flights out of Dallas Love Field to locations within Texas and neighboring states. In 1997 the law was expanded to include Kansas, Alabama and Mississippi. The lifted restrictions will have an immediate benefit for Mid-Continent travelers. More nonstop destinations from Dallas will offer more choices for Wichita travelers, officials say, and the increased competition will help keep fares competitive.  Wichita passengers will be able to fly nonstop from Dallas to the following destinations:

Beginning Oct. 13, 2014:

  • Baltimore/Washington (BWI)
  • Denver
  • Las Vegas
  • Orlando
  • Chicago Midway
  • Los Angeles
  • Washington Reagan National

Beginning Nov. 2, 2014:

  • Atlanta
  • Nashville
  • Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood
  • New York (LaGuardia)
  • Phoenix
  • San Diego
  • Orange County/Santa Ana
  • Tampa

Beginning Jan. 6, 2015:

  • San Francisco
  • Oakland

Southwest Airlines has planned a gate celebration from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday
