Airport Plans Disaster Exercise on Tuesday

The Wichita Airport Authority is scheduled to conduct a large-scale disaster exercise at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The exercise, mandated every three years by the Federal Aviation Administration, will occur north of Highway K42 between runways 1L and14.

The exercise will feature a 737 aircraft that crashes near a runway and breaks apart on impact.

A disaster has never occurred at the Wichita airport. However, federal regulations and best emergency management practices require commercial airports practice responding to simulated disasters.

The exercise will include approximately 300 officials and volunteers from various emergency management agencies. During the disaster exercise, the Airport Authority will use Twitter –  @FlyICT, using #ICTdrill – to provide information to the public.

Media outlets planning to attend the exercise should call Airport Administration at 316-946-4700 no later than 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15. Media attending the event must arrive at Airport Administration Building – 2173 Air Cargo Road – by 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16 in order to be escorted by bus to the crash site.
